Trees help clean the air we breathe, filter the water we drink, and provide habitat to over 80% of the world's terrestrial biodiversity. Forests provide jobs to over 1.6 billion people, absorb harmful carbon from the atmosphere, and are key ingredients in 25% of all medicines. Have you ever taken an Aspirin? It comes from the bark of a tree! We’ll plant one tree with every dollar donated. Earth Day is celebrated each year on April 22nd, marking the anniversary of the modern environmental movement. Earth Day is marked by more than a billion people annually as a day of action toward a cleaner environment and the fight against climate change. Leveraging on our strong roots, CX SP EMEAR has set a Big Hairy Ambitious Goal: To plant not just 10, 20 or 100 trees, we want to create a forest! In partnership with One Tree Planted, we are targeting to raise $10,000 to create a forest in Kitui. For every $1 you donate 1 tree gets planted. This project in Kitui, Kenya, is more than a mission to off-set carbon emissions, it is about empowering a community. We deliberately chose this project due to the potential far-reaching impact it will have not just on the environment but more so on the community as well. Q1 FY22 Fund aligned to Cisco initiative on CSR

The latest IPCC report on climate change spells code red for our planet. Disasters such as wildfires, hurricanes, flooding and drought are continuing to rise. There's no doubt that human impact is the main driver, but there is hope. People and organizations everywhere are working to reverse these impacts and preserve nature. And nature is resilient. Take Chernobyl, the site of a nuclear meltdown in 1986. Within 30 years, forests, marshes, fields and rivers reclaimed the land, reversing the effects of hundreds of years of human development. Diverse wildlife, including beaver, bison, birds, fish and more re-populated this no-man's land. Even more surprising, the wolf population in Chernobyl is seven times higher than nearby nature reserves. According to 1t.org, "Forests are an essential part of the solution to tackle climate change and biodiversity collapse. Forests make us healthier and more resilient; they filter air pollution and reduce heat islands in cities; and they can propel new drug discoveries to treat current and future diseases." All of the nonprofits in this Fund are highly rated on Charity Navigator and Guidestar, and several are part of 1t.org's work to conserve, restore and grow one trillion trees by 2030. "A landmark new report by hundreds of the world’s top climate scientists is a clarion call for immediate action to slash greenhouse gases in the face of unprecedented and accelerating climate change, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said today (August 9, 2021). Our food choices have a very direct impact on not just our own health but also the environment, farm workers and public health. Factory farms that exist to satisfy our demand for animal products adversely impact us in many different ways – learn more here : https://www.ffacoalition.org/blog-posts/factory-farming-basics. This is also a social justice and inclusivity issue since research shows that minorities are disproportionately impacted due to factory farming. The NGO’s in this fund strive to create a more compassionate and inclusive world by enabling people to make more thoughtful plant based food choices. The good news is that in addition to Cisco Foundation matching, any donations made via this fund will be matched by an external investment fund, VegInvest, dollar for dollar up to $50k per NGO annually. Note that Cisco employee data will not be shared with VegInvest, only the total $ raised. As of April 2022, VegInvest has matched a total of $1,720 (of which $1,359 were donated by Cisco employees and $361 were donated by non employees).

World Oceans Day was established in 2008 by the United Nations to promote public interest in the protection of the ocean and the sustainable management of its resources. Oceans are a major source of food and medicines, and are a critical part of the biosphere. This year’s theme is “The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods,” focusing on the celebration and support of the life and ecosystems that the ocean sustains. Our world needs transformational change. It’s time for the world to hold sectors accountable for their role in our environmental crisis while also calling for bold, creative, and innovative solutions. This will require action at all levels, from business and investment to city and national government. That’s where you come in: As an individual, you yield real power and influence as a consumer, a voter, and a member of a community that can unite for change. And many small donations add up to make a very large impact, especially if they're monthly recurring donations. Don’t underestimate your power. When your voice and your actions are united with thousands or millions of others around the world, we create a movement that is inclusive, impactful, and impossible to ignore. Every Earth Day can drive a year of energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to create a new plan of action for our planet.

We believe that a healthy ecosystem and thriving biodiversity are essential for every community. We are all a part of this quest and in Tanzania, we have started a reforestation project to contribute to this objective. Desertification is a big issue in the area. It is caused mostly by human activity and lack of alternative practices when it comes to agriculture. Soil erosion worsens every year, and contributes to lower farming outcomes, and an increase in the annual floodings from the nearby river which have destroyed homes and crops. Local schools and leaders of the area have started working on a Tree planting project to mitigate these issues. Their idea is that tree-planting is a sustainable solution to these problems that will contribute to a healthier environment. We want to support them and help accelerate this initiative that will also contribute to our global environmental challenges. The plan: more than 10,000 trees will be grown by students of a local Secondary School and transplanted along the riverbank and throughout the community. The students have set up an environmental club that is coordinating these efforts, supported by their teachers, and have already started working. One tree at a time, the students are reforesting the area! On the side, awareness campaigns in the community will be conducted so that this initiative is appreciated and cared for by everyone who will benefit from it. You can join us!

Effective Altruism for Climate Change GivingGreen.earth is an evidence-based guide to help donors and volunteers fight climate change. This fund is made up of the non-profits recommended by Giving Green. 2022 update: Giving Green has replaced The SunRise Foundation with Carbon180 and Evergreen Collaborative as the most effective policy groups along with the Clean Air Task Force. This fund will be updated accordingly once those groups are approved.

This Girl Rows In 2022 I will be rowing solo 3000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean as part of the Talisker Whisky Atlantic challenge also I hope to break the world record for the fastest solo female- more people have climbed Mt. Everest than have rowed across the Atlantic! Less than 20 women have ever completed this epic challenge. The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge is the premier event in ocean rowing – A challenge that will take me more than 3000 Miles west from San Sebastian in La Gomera, Canary Islands (28oN 18oW) to Nelson’s Dockyard English Harbour, Antigua & Barbuda (17oN 61oW).   I will be rowing for up to 18 hours a day, in temperatures in excess of 30 degrees and 30ft waves- The Waves in the Atlantic can be big, really big. This may be ok in a larger ocean-going vessel but in a small 20ft rowing boat it can lead to being capsized. thisgirlrows.com

The Sustainability@VMware Fund will always provide a curated list of nonprofits that tackle critical dimensions of sustainability and conservation with their global projects. We intend to uphold that mission statement while rotating the specific nonprofits in order to capture moments of community engagement during Earth month or other company-wide sustainability awareness campaigns. Feel free to bookmark this fund! In this launch, we hope to provide an access point to anyone who would like to donate towards sustainability, but is overwhelmed by the diversity of issues and number of nonprofits. These four nonprofits were chosen by surveying the Atlanta and Palo Alto Sustainability Ambassadors. Each nonprofit works globally on issues that affect us all and have been vetted by Sustainability in the Office of the CTO.
